Jeremy Jansen's (1980) interest in and research with 'found footage' started around his studies at the Werkplaats Typografie, where he collected 'forgotten' books from American libraries to make them physical again in the context of Ex-Libris. He mainly gave a new right to the tactility of the book and the value of the content by making all damage and fingerprints explicitly and visibly part of the story. Found images have always played a role in his work as a bookmaker and designer because he places them in a sequential context, organized by materiality and image composition. His methodology has gradually come to relate more and more to both found footage in the form of found snapshots and to institutionalized (online) archives. A new narrative is often created from a number of raw images from various sources under his editorial eye.
Jansen has been teaching at ArtEZ Arnhem for years on the theme of 'Image & Authorship' and gives various workshops worldwide on 'Storytelling with found images'. He made several books with artists who in one way or another are involved with existing images: with/for Anne Geene, Arjan de Nooy, Rein Jelle Terpstra, Thomas Kuijpers, Lana Mesic, Ton Grote and Ad van Denderen, among others.
In addition to his design practice, in which he mainly focuses on book design, he (in collaboration with Anne Geene and Arjan de Nooy) also publishes books under the name Blind Finch Books.
